'Live well with LiveWire'

Weight management

The Why Weight programme is completely free! You can attend the Weight Management groups for free without a referral from your GP. It is open to anyone with a BMI of 30 or more or a BMI of 28 or more if you have a long standing medical condition.

The weight management programmes at LiveWire are suitable for anyone and everybody who wants to lose weight and lead a healthier lifestyle. We have lots of different people attending the courses, all of different ages, shapes and sizes and everybody has different weight loss goals. Feedback from our weight management courses have shown that people find the support they receive from the other like-minded people in the group a fundamental aspect in supporting and motivating them to lose weight.

Everybody in the group is weighed discreetly and the Lifestyle Advisors will write down your new weight on your weight card and it is up to you whether you choose to disclose your weight loss with the rest of the group. The Advisors are there to offer support to you on your weight loss journey and will never make you feel guilty if you put weight on. It is about identifying areas to improve and seeing how we can move forward together. We are all human so we know that we all have the odd slip up from time to time.

LiveWire like to keep in contact with you for continuing support, advice and encouragement. Research also shows that if you attend follow up support sessions after completing weight management programmes, you are more likely to maintain your weight loss/ lose further weight. A Lifestyles advisor may contact you occasionally for up to 12 months after you have finished the course.

Unfortunately, the LiveWire Lifestyles services are only available for 16 years and over. However, because the underlying message of the weight management programmes includes healthy eating and portion control, the whole family can be involved in making healthier choices to their meal habits and increasing the exercise habits as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Live Life the Wolves Way - Warrington Wolves are currently running a lifestyle and exercise programme designed especially for overweight children aged 7-11 years old. The community programme runs over six continuous weeks (80 minute sessions) and is designed to provide children and their families with support and further education around nutrition, healthy eating and physical activity. There is also an emotional element, which helps build confidence, self discipline and self esteem. If you have any queries or are interested in booking a place please contact 01925 248894 community@wolvesfoundation.com

Stop smoking

Smoking causes many serious and fatal diseases including lung cancer, heart disease, bronchitis and emphysema. It also causes many other cancers, respiratory diseases, strokes and can affect fertility and male impotency.

You can often feel like you’ve been down every avenue and failed. Think what you have learnt from your past quit attempts and how your experiences can help you with your next one. Pop in to a drop-in clinic for a chat with a Lifestyles advisor to make a fresh plan and make those small changes which can get you on the road to quit for good. It can take most people four or five attempts before they go smoke free.

It’s easy to swap one behaviour for another; it’s common for people to put on weight when they stop smoking. Why not pop into one of our Why Weight drop-in clinics for some advice on keeping the pounds off? LiveWire now offer a number of Stop Smoking and Weight Management sessions where you can access both programmes at the same time.

If you’re looking for more motivation why not join the LiveWire Lighter Programme with the money you’d normally have used for cigarettes.

It’s free to access the Livewire’s Stop Smoking programme. The only price you’ll pay is for the cost of a normal prescription; unless you are exempt then products will also be free.

You can use the Lifestyles Stop Smoking programme for as long as you need. You’re never discharged and are always welcome back. However, the maximum length of time you can be prescribed stop smoking aids is a total of 12 weeks.

LiveWire offer free drop-in sessions across Warrington. No appointment is necessary. If you feel more comfortable having a one-to-one appointment with an advisor give us a call on freephone 0300 003 0818 to check availability in your area and booka place.

A Lifestyles advisor will give you the same support in the drop-in sessions and the appointment only sessions.

A drop-in is a quick, easy way to access the programme. There’s no appointment needed, just turn up anytime between the designated time slot. It’s not group therapy, so no having to stand up and talk about yourself and why you smoke.

Appointment only sessions are structured one-to-one with a Lifestyles advisor. To make an appointment call the office on freephone 0300 003 0818.

NRT and prescription medicines are not a miracle cure. They reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms but they don’t make them go away completely. You will still need to put a lot of effort into quitting but, as some of LiveWire’s past success stories will tell you, the treatments really help. See 'My Story' for evidence of local people's success stories.

There are too many different kinds of electronic cigarettes on the market to know what’s in them and exactly how they work. The government are looking into clinical trials to ensure they are safe. LiveWire recommends you do not use them as they are not proven to be completely safe and nicotine free.

You can find further information about electronic cigarettes by downloading this pdfE-Cig Factsheet

LiveWire can offer you support to come off your electronic cigarette. To discuss this with a Lifestyles advisor, please contact us on freephone 0300 003 0818.

It’s common to feel a little low when you stop smoking no matter what product you use. If it’s been part of your routine for a long time, you may go through a period where you feel like something is missing. LiveWire’s Stop Smoking Team suggest keeping a diary on how you’re feeling throughout your successful quit and talk to your advisor. If you’re concerned about your mood whilst taking Champix it is recommended you stop taking it and seek advice from your GP.

Smoking is harmful throughout your pregnancy and stopping at any stage will be better for your baby. The good news is that if you quit within the first three months of your pregnancy your baby is likely to be a healthy weight.

It is not recommended to use Champix or Zyban whilst pregnant. However, you can still use some nicotine based products. It doesn’t matter where you are up to with your pregnancy, LiveWire is here to help and support you every step of the way. See our section on smoking in pregnancy for further details about what support is available.
