Inspired by the Netball World Cup 2019 but haven’t played since school? Why not give the game a go at Orford or Great Sankey Neighbourhood Hubs

Inspired by the Netball World Cup? Love netball but haven’t played since school? LiveWire has a number of popular sessions that can help you get back on the court – whatever your age or fitness levels.

Netball has been growing in popularity in recent years – with the Netball World Cup that’s currently being held in Liverpool until Sunday 21st July sure to help increase the sport’s appeal further.

LiveWire’s Sports Development team runs a number of weekly netball sessions at Orford and Great Sankey Neighbourhood Hubs in conjunction with Complete Netball Solutions and Penketh Panthers Netball Club.

Walking Netball was launched to encourage people to become more active across Warrington and is aimed at people who are looking for a way back to netball but for a variety of reasons may not feel they can play the standard netball format.

The sessions are ideal for older people, or people returning to the sport after a while away from the game.

The other session offered by LiveWire, Back to Netball, is a natural progression for people who want to develop further after enjoying Walking Netball, or for people who have taken time out from playing regular netball after having a family or being injured.

Catriona Sudlow – Activity Development Manager – LiveWire said: “We hope that the Netball World Cup will help inspire more people to get back into Netball as a fun way to keep active and re-ignite interest in a past hobby or interest.

“Walking Netball is a great stepping stone back into exercise for many and provides a fun way to keep active and healthy, and Back to Netball is perfect for people who may have previously played the sport regularly and who want to take up the game again.”

Viv Roughley, 72, described the Walking Netball session as a “highlight of her week” saying: “I’d not played netball since school but came along after taking up exercising when I retired. I find coming her exhilarating! I love playing the game and love being here with these ladies. I’d say to anyone considering trying it to come along and give it a go, even if you’ve not done any exercise for a while.”

Josie Harris, 67, has played netball since she was 8-years-old. She said: “Walking Netball allows me to keep playing the game I love that I have played all my life. It keeps me fit and it is with a great group of ladies – I absolutely love it!”

Betty Farrington, 75, also played netball at school. She said: “It’s hard work, but fun as well as exercise. I love coming and we give a warm welcome to anyone who comes along.”

LiveWire’s netball sessions are as follows:

  • Walking Netball – Wednesdays 10.30am-11.30am Orford Hub
  • Walking Netball – Thursday (in partnership with Penketh Panthers Netball Club) 7pm-8pm Great Sankey Neighbourhood Hub
